Beirut Trauma
Author: M., 20 years old male, Syria
“Aug 4th Beirut, I was with my friends in our dorm's lounge talking about what kind of projects we are going to work on during our summer break. Suddenly, we hear a very loud noise. The first thing that came into my mind was the memories I had in Damascus and Aleppo during the war. I then thought that it might be a light earthquake or Israel is bombing. I directly thought about the safety of my friends who were in their rooms and thankfully they were okay. I spent the rest of the day with my friends making and receiving calls from family and friends to ensure that we are fine and that they are all fine too. When I went back to my room, it had a big sea of glass. It reminded me of the incident that happened when I was around 12 or 13 years old of the first explosion in Damascus. I remembered the fear that I had every time I went to sleep because there my bed was under a big glass window similar to the one in my dorm’s room. I wasn’t scared for my life when the explosion happened, I got used to those sounds and vibration. However, I had my deepest thoughts whenever I went back to my room as I stayed up thinking what if something similar happens while we are all sleeping, and all my friends and I get injured with small bullets of glass. It was truly a night that I would never want to remember again!”
