Swedish psychiatry, unlike that of america, has tended to be involved in traditional somatic medicine. The swedish psychiatrist is viewed as a symptom remover rather than a problem solver. Although there seems to be a lack of psychiatric "sophistication," as a result of the generally liberal attitude assumed by the government and populace, the problems of mental health which would logically be expected to appear have not. Overcrowding in mental institutions has not been and continues not to be a problem. Having missed the era of individual, dynamic psychotherapy, sweden is working out its mental health problems in a social and community perspective.
