Studied traditional interpretations of commonly entertained beliefs and rituals in a sample of 153 arab psychiatric patients. Ritual practices associated significantly with illiterary and with the presence of observable disorders of behavior. The belief that general physical weakness is the cause of psychogenic symptoms was exposed. Its implications for therapy are discussed from traditional and medicopsychological angles. (17 ref.)
