80 patients given the Hamilton Rating Scales weekly, received various courses of sedatives, tranquilizers, antidepressants, and analgesics without relief for more than a short period. All previous medications were stopped and 4 drug dosages allocated at random. Doxepin showed a significant effect on headache, anxiety, and depression, and improvement continued longer than that shown with other drugs. Up to the 4th wk. Ss had been showing improvement on amitriptyline and diazepam as well.
