Strategies for the extension of mental health services in developing countries

A model mental health program is outlined based on experience in Cali, ColombiOne of the principal aims is to use the existing general medical administration. This is in line with the principles set forth in 1975 by the World Health Organization for use in 4 target areas: Colombia, India, Senegal, and Sudan. The following are essential in tailoring or adapting mental health services to the social and political needs of such countries: determining priorities, developing the best methods for primary care delivery, evaluating the effectiveness of low-cost services, and educating the community in the use of mental health services.
