Discusses depressive pathology in Algeria from 1962 to 1980. Considerable increase in depression is noted, and its frequency is classified according to age, sex, and socioprofessional categories. Traditional clinical pictures are compared with those induced by social disorder and the discomfort of acculturation. Two important elements in the understanding of the depressive state according to cultural connotations are discussed.
