In spite of differences in economic and social status as well as work arrangements between young people volunteering to perform services abroad and migrant workers, both groups show a large number of analogous psychopathological problems. Any problems that a volunteer worker may exhibit after arrival abroad are overshadowed by those that already exist. In treatment, it is found that the patient does not consider Li dosages nor the therapist's efforts to be adequate. Upon arrival the young volunteer can suffer decompensation from culture shock. Stress and anxiety become existential questions, even though there were no pathological aspects in his/her decision-making process that resulted in the selection of foreign duty. On the other hand, those who select foreign duty for ideological reasons or for the purpose of culture submersion may develop psychopathological problems in terms of narcissistic depression and damage to self-esteem.
