Describes a fantasy that often appears among Algerian patients and may play a psychopathological role. It is a combination of imaginary representations of Algerian and French culture as reflected in the 2 parents. These diverse representations of an oedipal nature become intense and ambivalent, and they correspond characteristically to defense mechanisms. Two case studies of Algerian men reflect this development. Ss came from different walks of Algerian life, but both were subjected to family misfortunes and were transferred to France for treatment of depression. In both cases the father was identified with France and the mother with AlgeriThis categorization aided recovery in these 2 particular cases.
