Investigated the effect of H. Benson and M. Z. Klipper's (1976) relaxation technique on the stress of 22 female and 40 male 5th-grade students blocked by sex and randomly assigned to either the treatment group or a reading-activity control group. Ss in the treatment group practiced relaxation each morning for 10 min over a 6-wk period, while the control group was taken to a separate room for a reading activity. Results indicate that Ss in the treatment group scored lower on the Test Anxiety Scale for Children and General Anxiety Scale for Children than did the control group. Females scored higher on the general anxiety measure than did males. Follow-up 3 wks after the treatment had been discontinued revealed that the treatment effects had disappeared but not those related to sex differences for the general anxiety measure
