Discusses some of the legal and ethical problems of providing psychiatric care for immigrants. The authors have received numerous foreign patients in their hospital who are suffering from psychiatric problems and who have been hospitalized in their homeland, often several times. The reasons for their coming to Morocco vary, but generally it is the result of some type of desire to escape, believing life in Morocco to be brighter and easier. Three case studies are summarized, those of a Frenchman, a Frenchwoman, and an Englishman. Ss eventually sought hospital treatment and, in general, responded well to it. The physicians involved, however, became caught between repatriation requests from Ss' families and homeland embassies and Ss' desires to stay. Unfortunately, there are no Moroccan statutes to cover these situations. The authors believe that the repatriation process should not be forced on the patients too quickly, since after a period of recuperation many of them can be convinced, and sometimes even demand, that they be repatriated.
