Background and objectives: Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex neurobiological and developmental disability that typically appears during a child's first three years of life. It is characterized by qualitative deficitsin reciprocal social interaction, communication skills, and restricted patterns of behavior. The present study assessed quality of life of parents with children who have autism and its association with some related variables. Methods: A descriptive correlation study was conducted in Hawler Teaching Hospital in Erbil, Iraq from February 2012 to February2013. A non-probability purposive sample of 115 parents was selected according to the study criterion data were collected by direct interview. Quality of life was measured by a standardized questionnaire of the World Health Organization (WHOQOL-BREF). Results: For fathers of children with autism there was a significant association between age and physical domains, level of education and environmental domain and also general health, occupational status and environmental domain. Highly significant associations were observed between fathers' socio-economic status and all other domains and items except social relationship domain. Conversely, mothers of children with autism demonstrated a highly significant difference between occupational status and environmental domain, a highly significant relationship between socio-economic status and environmental domains and overall quality of life. Conclusion: Findings from the present study suggest that the quality of life is adversely impacted for parents of children with autism.
Autism is a disorder and deficiency in the growth and development of neurological and biological cells, which usually appears during the first three years of a child's life, and is characterized by a qualitative deficiency in social relations, communication skills, and limited patterns of behavior. This study aims to assess the quality of life for parents with autistic children and its relationship with some variables. Methods of conducting the research: A descriptive study was conducted in the Erbil Teaching Hospital and the Autism Society in Kurdistan, Iraq / Erbil, for the period from February 2012 to the end of February 2013. A cross section was selected consisting of 115 parents who had an autistic child and according to the terms of the study. The information was collected by way of a conversation and measuring the quality of life using a global standard designed for this purpose by the World Health Organization. An appropriate statistical analysis program was used to interpret and analyze the results. Results: The results of the study showed that the majority of fathers had an average age of (41). 08) years old, graduates from universities or institutes, and were unskilled at work, and with a low standard of living. While the average age of mothers was (36.43) years, and they have a primary school certificate mostly, housewives, and a low level of pension. As for children with autism, their average age was (9.37) years, and most of them are males, their average age at diagnosis is 6.97 years, and most of them live in cities. A statistically significant relationship was found between the age of parents and physical health, the cultural level with environmental conditions and the second item (public health), and there is also a statistical relationship between the professional status and environmental conditions according to the scale used in the study. Conclusion: The results of this study proved that autistic children affect the quality of life for parents in general, therefore doctors and nurses and health professionals should consider the family’s general care plan, and participate in providing comprehensive care (physically, psychologically, socially and environmentally for the children with parents) . In addition to the necessity of establishing a specialized and advanced center for autistic children with high specifications to work on early diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of the child and reduce the percentage of his disability, as well as reduce the burden on the family. To contribute to improving their quality of life in the long run.
