Giving alzheimer’s a voice and a helping hand

This presentation will give a summary of the implementation of the 'Capacity Building / Reaching out program' which took place in Lebanon in 2011-2012 and obtained the 2013 Metlife award, in collaboration with the Ministry of Social affairs throughout their Community Development Centers. Workshops and seminars were conducted throughout Lebanon, aiming at establishing a platform for eventual chapters, in cooperation with renowned Lebanese doctors, occupational therapists and professional trainers. With an estimated number of Alzheimer’s patients in Lebanon to be over 30,000, the Capacity Building / Outreach Program was an ambitious initiative to build capacities of staff at the Community Development Centres and reach out to families in the most remote areas. The project was completed in partnership with the Ministry of Social Affairs and The Elderly Association in Lebanon. MetLife-ADI Awards for Dementia Care Education The MetLife-ADI Awards for the Best Dementia Care Education Project consists of three awards, each of $10,000, with one covering the Americas, one for Europe, the Middle East and Africa and the third being awarded for the best project in the Asia Pacific region. The winner of the Europe, Middle East and Africa category was Alzheimer Association Lebanon for their Capacity Building & Outreach Program. Alongside the Ministry of Social Affairs, Alzheimer’s Association Lebanon aimed to access those living in rural and poorer urban communities with their project and to increase services to them. Through the Ministry’s 130 Community Development Centres a series of one-day training sessions took place for health and social workers, led by dementia experts including doctors, occupational therapists and social workers. Follow-up outreach also took place to raise awareness among families and carers. Since the project was introduced by Diane Mansour, an estimated total of 800 individuals across the country directly benefitted from the programme.
