Reviews the research literature on the occurrence of psychopathological reactions after open heart surgery involving extracorpular circulation. A case report is presented to illustrate a patient's coping strategies pre- and postsurgery. The case also illustrates the contribution of psychiatric liaison services to the total care of the patient.
