Interviewed 71 Palestinians living in a Michigan community concerning their attitudes toward assimilation, social relations, US politics, US Middle East policy, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Findings reveal that Ss lived in an Arab neighborhood and were immersed in Arab social structures and relationships, with very little assimilation. In dealing with Americans on an individual basis, Ss reported positive experiences. However, in dealing with the police, Ss perceived hostile and unfriendly treatment. Ss were generally not interested in US politics but paid attention to the politics of Palestine and the Middle East. Ss had doubts about US activities in the Middle East, and opinions on Palestine were mixed. Overall results suggest that Palestinians view themselves as a nation in exile rather than as immigrants and that this perception affects their attitudes and behavior. (6 ref)
