Conducted a survey to determine causes for admission to nursing homes, using 101 Ss admitted to 2 geriatric homes in Alexandria, Egypt. Basic health care needs and loneliness were the 2 major categories of reason for admission. Loneliness was enhanced by the effects of rapid urbanization with attendant difficulties older people have in adapting to a new way of life.
