Myers asked 16 psychologists to predict the results of an experiment and what they thought cognitive dissonance theory would predict. The prediction of the majority was borne out, but the majority felt dissonance theory would have made the contrary prediction. Myers concluded that dissonance theory generated unwarranted connotations and also that the gulf between dissonance and reinforcement theories was artificial. It is argued here that unwarranted connotations can be drawn from all theories and also that the difference between cognitive and reinforcement theories is real and heuristically valuable. An experiment based on the difference is suggested.
